Evaluation of the Impact of Fines on the Performance of Sub-Base Materials

The study aims to evaluate the change in behavior of sub-base materials being used road pavements through blending fines different types amounts. Fines are added aggregate samples as part gradations proposed by American Association for State and Highway Transportation Official (AASHTO). Composite conforming AASHTO B C were prepared mixing coarse aggregates varying proportions, ranging from 0 15%. Laboratory tests—including quality tests (abrasion test, flakiness index elongation Index), physical (particle size analysis specific gravity), strength test (modified Proctor, California bearing ratio, permeability test)—were performed on control well modified samples. It was observed that material with 0% yielded highest CBR values (greater than 98%) coefficient 4.4 × 10−4 cm/s. However, increasing up 15%, a substantial reduction value 10% 1.62 10−7 cm/s noticed. Based these results, modulus rigidity (MR) corresponding structural numbers determined each layer. Conclusively, required thickness base course increased 11 cm 24 (118%) addition 15% according Design method.
